Ely & District Cycling Club - B&T Motor Repairs Press Release 24th May 2021
Members of the Ely & District Cycling Club - B&T Motor Repairs won the team category at the ECCA 50 mile championships held on Saturday thanks to a number of excellent individual rides. The race took place on the F2/50 course near Cambourne, having been relocated from its usual home on the E2/50 course due to ongoing roadworks. Rob Golding put in another excellent performance to finish the 50 mile course in a time of 1 hour 46 minutes and 27 seconds, a personal best for Golding over that distance by a margin of nearly two minutes and a time which put him in 5th place overall. Darran Bennett was the second fastest Ely rider, finishing in 1:48:47 with 14th place overall. Their times, combined with John Manlow's time of 1:54:11, meant that Ely took the team prize with a combined time over two minutes faster than Fenland Clarion CC who took second place.
The Hitchin Nomads 25 mile race also took place on Saturday, held on the F14/25 course near Guilden Morden. Derek Ricketts completed the two lap course in a time of 1:01:01, a course personal best by over a minute, putting him in 22nd place overall. Aaron Ball meanwhile was competing in his first ever open time trial race and, particularly given that he was racing on a road bike without any specialist aerodynamic equipment other than clip-on aero bars, his time of 1:06:00 was an impressive debut to open racing.
On Sunday Rory Havis was the sole Ely rider to take part in the Great Yarmouth CC race held over 25 miles on the BS13A course to the south-west of Great Yarmouth. Havis took 5th place overall with a time of 58:06.
Junior rider Harvey Woodroffe was racing once again, this time in a short-course MTB cross-country race at the Redbridge Cycling Centre near Ilford. The Eastern region Regional Championships were held as part of the Beastway MTB 2021 series, and Woodroffe took 4th place in the Under 12 boys' race, just missing a podium place.
