Ely & District Cycling Club - B&T Motor Repairs Press Release 8th September 2021
One of the Ely & District Cycling Club's junior riders, Tom Lewis, took part in his first national championship race on Saturday in only his second 10 mile time trial race. Tom was competing in the RTTC National Youth Championship Finals held at the Mallory Park race circuit near Leicester. Tom completed the 10 mile course in 24:21, 76 seconds faster than his previous time, leaving him in 11th place in his age group.
Senior Ely riders were also racing in a 10 mile time trial later on Saturday, in a race organised by the East Anglia VTTA on the E2/10 course along the A11. Having set a new club record over 30 miles the weekend before, Darran Bennett came close to setting a new record over 10 miles, his time of 19:34 being only 6 seconds slower than the club record time set by Mathew Eley in 2016. It was Bennett's best time to date over 10 miles, and the second fastest Ely rider Derek Ricketts set a course personal best with his time of 21:22. John Manlow and Will Shepherd were close behind with times of 21:25 and 21:49 respectively.
On Sunday junior racer Harvey Woodroffe was back grasstrack racing again, this time at event at Crowland hosted by Spalding CC. Using a larger gear than he had used in his previous grasstrack race paid off for Harvey, as he took overall victory in the Under 12s category, having taken first place in three of the five disciplines.
