Riders from Ely & District Cycling Club - B&T Motor Repairs Press put in a number of good rides in the 7th round of the Eastern Cyclocross League, but the stand out performance of the day was from Tom Lewis who achieved his first ever podium finish in a bike race.
The 7th round was hosted by Diss & District Cycling Club and was held at the Redgrave Activies Centre in Suffolk. The course featured a lot of tight twisty corners on the grassy surface of the playing fields together with short but technical climbs and descents around the periphery of the course. Sets of hurdles and steps added to the technical challenges presented to the riders.
In the Under 12s race Harvey Woodroffe narrowly missed out on a 5th podium in 7 events, finishing in 4th place, while Lucas Bowman continued to improve on his form with 9th place.
Tom Lewis was racing in the Youth race, and got up to 2nd place during the first lap as a result of being able to ride one of the steep technical climbs while his competitors were forced to dismount. His early efforts were hindered by a crash on a slippery off-camber corner which damaged his saddle and front brake, but he still managed to work his way back into 2nd position for his first podium place.
Kieran Vanhoutte was also racing in the Youth race but was held up by a problem at the start. Overtaking on such a tight and narrow course is always difficult, but Vanhoutte made up places during the race to finish in 16th position.
In the V40 category Ferenc Vanhoutte was racing with a niggling back injury but still managed to finish in 31st place, while in the V50 race Neil Bowman took another top 10 finish, crossing the line in 8th place.
The next round of the Eastern Cyclocross League is the Regional Championships which will be held at Trinity Park in Ipswich.
