ELY TAKES THE TEAM PRIZE IN ELY OPEN

Ely & District Cycling Club - B&T Motor Repairs hosted its annual summer open time trial on Sunday, held on the B10/1R course from Mepal to the Lancaster Way roundabout along the A142 and back to Mepal again. The overall winner was Ben Stancombe of Peterborough CC, who finished the 10 mile course in a time of 20 minutes and 35 seconds. Second and third steps on the podium were taken by Ely riders, with Darran Bennett completing the course in 21:42 followed by Rory Havis with a time of 21:49. Their times, combined with that of the third-fastest Ely rider Derek Ricketts, who stopped the clock on 23:07, meant that Ely took the team prize awarded to the club with the three fastest riders.

Ferenc Vanhoutte was the next Ely rider home setting an impressive time of 24:08 given that he was riding a standard road bike rather than a specialist time trial machine in his first ever open time trial. Chris Brown finished in a time of 24:26, one place ahead of Sophie Walker Meers whose time of 24:38 put her in second place in the women's competition. Martin Brown, who had the honour of being the first rider on the road, completed the course in 25:54, followed by Rob Goult on 26:04, Glen Clark on 27:33 and Aimee Hockley-Righton with a time of 31:27 in her first ever time trial.

The times set by Darran Bennett, Rory Havis, Derek Ricketts and Chris Brown were all personal best times over the B10/1R course in open competition, reflecting the good conditions in which the race was held.

Some of the riders competing on Sunday had also been racing the day before, at the EDCA 10 mile race on the B10/37R course near Tottenhill. Derek Ricketts was the fastest Ely rider on the day, coming home in 19th place with a time of 22:37, a personal best for Ricketts on the B10/37R and one place ahead of John Manlow who finished the 10 miles only 7 seconds down on Rickett's time. Will Shepherd completed the race in a time of 23:57 followed by Robert Goult on 25:36.

Will Shepherd had also been racing earlier in the week in the VTTA race held on the E2/10 course on the A11. Taking advantage of the fast course, Shepherd set a new personal best time for 10 miles, finishing in a time of 21:45 at an average speed of just over 27.5mph.
