ELY RIDERS BRAVE THE WIND AND COLD

Weather conditions on Saturday were hardly conducive to racing, with near-freezing temperatures and a strong North-Westerly wind, but that did not stop four members of the Ely & District Cycling Club - B&T Motor Repairs from competing in a time trial event organised by the East Anglia Veterans Time Trial Association. The race, held over a 10 mile course from Six Mile Bottom to Fourwentways and back on the A11 known as the E2/10 course, was conducted under a strict social-distancing protocol, something which time trialling naturally lends itself to.

The fastest Ely rider on the day was John Manlow, who completed the 10 mile course in a time of 22 minutes and 14 seconds, at an average speed of just under 27mph, to leave him in 39th place overall. Martin Holmes finished the course in 22:36, just a few seconds faster than Derek Ricketts who stopped the clock at 22:42, followed by Will Shepherd with a time of 24:02. The event was won by Ronnie Stone of the Islington Cycling Club in a time of 19:45, one of only three riders to break the 20 minute barrier in challenging conditions.
