EASTER ELY ACTION

The racing action started early on Easter weekend for members of the Ely & District Cycling Club - B&T Motor Repairs with three riders taking part in a 10 mile time trial organised by Kings Lynn CC on Good Friday morning. Rory Havis took a podium place, finishing in second place overall with a time of 21:33, only 19 seconds behind the winner. Will Shepherd was 5th with a time of 23:48 while Robert Goult was 9th on 26:21.

Racing continued in the afternoon with a 15 mile race organised by Cambridge CC on the F2/15 course near Cambourne. Darran Bennett was once again the fastest Ely rider present, completing the 15 mile course in a time of 30:27 to finish in 6th place. However, Rob Golding was only 42 seconds behind, his time of 31:09 putting him in 11th place overall. Derek Ricketts stopped the clock with a time of 33:03 in 28th place ahead of John Manlow whose time of 33:26 gave him 35th place. Both Bennett and Ricketts set new course and distance personal bests, while Bennett's time was a new club record for 15 miles. The combined times of Bennett, Golding and Ricketts meant that Ely won the team competition, the second time this year in open competition.

In a notable change of scenery, junior rider Tom Lewis was racing on Saturday in the second round of the Scottish National Youth Circuit Series race at Kames Racing Circuit in Ayrshire, hosted by East Kilbride Road Club. Not having taken part in the first round, Lewis started near the back of the field, something which proved a big disadvantage in a race which was fast from the start. He made it into the second group on the road but was unable to catch the lead group. Lewis ended up in a sprint for 4th, but he was blocked by lapped riders in his sprint for the line to finish 5th.
