BUTTERISS WINS HANDICAP RACE

Members of the Ely & District Cycling Club - B&T Motor Repairs put in many strong performances in a variety of races over the weekend, but the highlight was Simon Butteriss's ride in the Shaftesbury CC 25 mile race. Held on the F2A/25 course near Cambourne, Butteriss completed the 25 miles in a time of 53 minutes and 14 seconds at an average speed of just over 28 mph. This put him in 4th overall, and 1st in the handicap race. Will Shepherd took part in the same event, and despite finding the windy conditions challenging Shepherd still managed to finish in under an hour, with a time of 59:02, which put him in 19th place overall.

John Manlow and Derek Ricketts were also racing in a 25 mile event, but preferred the scenic delights of Guilden Morden to the drag strip of the A428. Racing on the F14/25 course in an event hosted by Finsbury Park CC, Manlow and Ricketts also found the going hard due to the strong winds. On this occasion Manlow dealt with the conditions best, finishing just outside the hour mark in a time of 1:00:12 putting him 8th out of 39 finishers. Ricketts stopped the clock with a time of 1:02:49 in 16th position.

Four Ely riders were competing in the Kings Lynn CC 10 mile race on Saturday, held on the B10/37R course near Tottenhill. Darran Bennett was once again the fastest Ely rider, finishing in 4th place with a time of 21:42. Rory Havis's time was just five seconds faster than that set by Rob Golding, with times of 22:20 and 22:25 respectively, which put them in 8th and 9th places. Rob Goult finished ina time of 27:21 putting him in 31st position.

Junior rider Harvey Woodroffe had a busy weekend's racing, competing on both Saturday and sunday. On Saturday he was racing in the second round of the LVYCC Spring Series at Redbridge Cycling Centre in Essex. Woodroffe finished that race in 13th place in the U21 Boys' race, on the same lap as the leaders but having felt unwell during the race. Woodroffe switched to off-road racing the next day, competing in the 2nd round of the Travers MTB series. Feeling better and back in form, he went one place better than he had in the first round, taking another podium spot but this time in 2nd place.
