Many members of the Ely & District Cycling Club - B&T Motor Repairs were racing this weekend, but the stand-out performance of the weekend was that of Simon Butteriss in the EDCA 25 mile District Championship race on Sunday. The event was hosted by the Wisbech Wheelers on the B25/6 course along the A47, and Butteriss posted the fastest time of the day, completing the 25 mile course in a time of 54:46 to take the District Championship. Rory Havis finished in 4th place in a time of 56:05 with Will Shepherd stopping the clock in just over the hour mark with a time of 1:00:17 to leave him in 8th overall. John Manlow had a less successful day, crashing during his warm-up ride resulting in a trip to hospital.
The day before, Ely riders were taking part in the Godric CC race on the B10/43 course at Bungay. Robert Golding and Darran Bennett posted exactly the same time over the 10 mile course, both finishing in a time of 20:44, putting them in joint third place. Derek Ricketts finished in 10th place with a time of 22:21, just ahead of Colin Currie who completed the 10 mile course in 22:30.
Junior Ely riders Harvey Woodroffe and Tom Lewis were also racing on Saturday, in the third round of the LVYCC Spring Series at Redbridge in the U12 and U16 categories respectively. Woodroffe rode agressively, attacking the leading group repeatedly, but despite an initially successful attack on the final climb of the day he got caught by the group to finish in 5th place overall. Lewis rode a tactical race but got caught on the wrong side of a split in the group. Despite his valiant efforts to bridge the gap to the leading group he was unable to do so, and finished in 13th place.
