WHO's WHO

Martin Holland Ely and District Cycling Club, Chairman

Martin Holland - Club Chairman

I rode my 1st Time Trial in 1981, a Boston Wheelers Evening 10 mile, since then I have gone on to compete in Road Races, both Grass & Hard Track, Cyclo Cross & MTB. Grass Track was my most successful branch of the sport, finishing runner up in 3 National Championships over 800m & 8km. I think I have competed in one form or another every year since 1981. I joined Ely & District CC in 1995 when I moved to the area.

Switched to cycling after a long running career in order to minimise injuries. I now regularly participate in duathlon and other cycling events with great age group success. With regular Tuesday night Time Trials through the summer there is always something to focus on with plenty of knowledgeable people to give advice and guidance. I am in no doubt that being a member of Ely & District CC has helped me in achieving my goals.

Mathew Eley – Club sponsor (B&T Motor Repairs)

After racing motocross from age 9 to 30, a good friend got me into cycling and mountain biking. I raced my first 10 mile time trial on a borrowed bike, baggy shorts and a t-shirt and hated every minute but when I got back and heard my result I pretty quickly thought “I can definitely beat that time!” and that’s where the addiction began! Week after week, ever chasing to get a faster time. From then on I gained a few club records over various distances. I enjoyed changing up the TTs with some MTB rides around Thetford forest. In 2016, I decided to move away from TT and focus on where the heart is, XC mountain bike racing, gaining some wins, racing abroad in stage races and achieving my Expert Category race licence.

I run B&T Motor Repairs, an Ely based business started by my father (Brian Eley) in 1986 and we’ve been looking after customers' vehicles to the highest standards ever since (www.bandtmotorrepairs.co.uk).
I've been sponsoring the club since 2016 because I am really passionate about supporting the community we live in and see all the benefits cycling has for all generations and abilities. We’ve loved seeing the club growing over the years and it’s very rewarding being able to help the club bring on the youth riders through skills training who are now competing at local competitions like Mud Sweat and Gears and Cyclocross.
